What is the IB Primary Years Programme?

The PYP is the first program in the International Baccalaureate continuum, designed specifically for early learners. At an IB school in Morocco, the PYP provides a framework that challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning.

Core elements of the PYP:

  • Transdisciplinary learning — Six themes that explore knowledge across traditional subject boundaries
  • Inquiry-based approach — Students ask questions, investigate, and construct understanding
  • Concept-driven curriculum — Focus on big ideas that transfer across contexts
  • Student agency — Children have voice and choice in their learning

The Six PYP Transdisciplinary Themes

At an IB school in Morocco, PYP students explore six recurring themes that provide the framework for learning:

1. Who We Are

An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social, and spiritual health; human relationships; and our responsibility to the broader community.

2. Where We Are in Place and Time

An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations, and migrations of humankind; and the relationships between individuals and civilizations.

3. How We Express Ourselves

An inquiry into the ways we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs, and values; the ways we reflect on, extend, and enjoy our creativity; and our appreciation of the aesthetic.

4. How the World Works

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; and the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and the environment.

5. How We Organize Ourselves

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

6. Sharing the Planet

An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them.

Benefits of the PYP at an IB School in Morocco

Development of the Whole Child

The PYP at an IB school in Morocco addresses students’ academic, social, physical, emotional, and cultural needs. This holistic approach ensures children develop as well-rounded individuals.

International Mindedness

From an early age, PYP students develop an understanding of different cultures and perspectives. In Morocco’s diverse society, this international mindedness is particularly valuable.

Strong Foundation for Future Learning

The skills developed in the PYP—inquiry, critical thinking, communication, and self-management—provide an excellent foundation for the Middle Years Programme and beyond.

PYP in the Moroccan Context

An IB school in Morocco offering the PYP integrates local context into the international framework:

  • Arabic language development — Moroccan students maintain connection to their linguistic heritage
  • Cultural celebrations — Moroccan traditions and festivals are incorporated into learning
  • Local community connections — Service learning projects address Moroccan community needs
  • Global perspectives — Students understand Morocco’s place in the world

The PYP Exhibition

The culmination of the PYP is the Exhibition, a significant event in which students demonstrate their learning through an extended, collaborative inquiry project. At an IB school in Morocco, the Exhibition showcases students’ ability to:

  • Conduct independent research
  • Work collaboratively with peers
  • Take action on issues that matter to them
  • Communicate their learning to the school community
